George Washington was born in Virginia in 1732. He became commander of the Continental Army during the American Revolution and helped lead the colonies through the long struggle for independence from Britain.
After the war, Washington presided over the Constitutional Convention and became the first president of the United States in 1789. He served two terms and established important examples for the new office, including the peaceful transfer of presidential power. The national capital was later named in his honor.
Washington’s life also belongs to the difficult history of slavery. Mount Vernon depended on enslaved labor, and more than one hundred enslaved people were owned by him. His will ordered that the people he personally owned be freed after his wife’s death.
