Nikola Tesla was born in 1856 in Smiljan, in present-day Croatia, and came from a Serbian family. He studied engineering and later moved to the United States, where he worked as an inventor and electrical engineer.
Tesla developed important inventions connected with alternating current electricity. His induction motor and polyphase power system helped make it practical to transmit electrical energy over long distances and power homes, businesses, and machines.
He also experimented with high-frequency electricity, radio control, wireless communication, and dramatic electrical coils. Not every idea succeeded, but his imaginative experiments influenced later technologies and made him a symbol of inventive thinking. The scientific unit used to measure magnetic flux density is named the tesla.
