Rosa Parks was born in Alabama in 1913. She worked as a seamstress and was already active in the local NAACP, where she helped document discrimination and supported campaigns for civil rights.
On December 1, 1955, Parks refused to surrender her bus seat to a white passenger in Montgomery. Her arrest helped begin the Montgomery bus boycott, during which Black residents avoided city buses for more than a year while challenging segregation.
The protest ended after the Supreme Court allowed a ruling against segregated buses to stand. Parks continued working for justice for decades, including efforts connected with housing, education, political participation, and the rights of prisoners. She later received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
