Ada Lovelace was born in London in 1815. She studied mathematics at a time when advanced scientific education was unusual for women and developed a strong interest in machines, patterns, and mathematical ideas.
Lovelace worked with inventor Charles Babbage, who designed a proposed mechanical computer called the Analytical Engine. In 1843, she translated an article about the machine and added a much longer set of explanatory notes.
One of her notes described a method the engine could use to calculate Bernoulli numbers. Because the steps were intended for a programmable machine, Lovelace is often described as the first computer programmer. She also imagined computers working with more than ordinary arithmetic. Her notes were far ahead of the technology available during her lifetime.
