Frida Kahlo was born in Coyoacán, Mexico, in 1907. She experienced polio as a child and was seriously injured in a bus accident at eighteen. During her long recovery, painting became an important way to explore her experiences.
Kahlo created many self-portraits and pictures connected with identity, family, physical pain, Mexican culture, plants, animals, and personal symbolism. Her work combined careful observation with imaginative elements rather than following one single artistic movement.
She developed a recognizable personal style that included traditional Mexican clothing, braided hair, flowers, and bold accessories. Today her paintings and life continue to inspire conversations about art, disability, resilience, and self-expression. Her family home, the Blue House, is now a museum in Mexico City.
