Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg in 1756. His father, Leopold, taught him music, and Mozart began performing and composing while still a child. The family traveled widely so European audiences could hear him and his sister Maria Anna play.
Mozart later lived in Vienna and wrote music for many different settings. His works include symphonies, concertos, chamber music, sacred pieces, and operas such as The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, and Don Giovanni.
He could shape memorable melodies while creating complex musical conversations between instruments and voices. Mozart died in 1791 at the age of thirty-five, but his compositions remain central to orchestras, opera houses, music lessons, and concerts. More than six hundred works are included in the standard catalogue of his music.
