Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in Maryland around 1822. In 1849 she escaped to freedom, but she did not simply remain safe in the North. She returned many times to help relatives and other enslaved people travel toward freedom through the network known as the Underground Railroad.
Tubman became known for courage, careful planning, and determination. During the American Civil War, she worked for the Union as a nurse, cook, scout, and spy. Later she supported education, care for older people, and the movement for women’s voting rights.
