Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta in 1929 and became a Baptist minister and one of the best-known leaders of the American civil rights movement. He called for equal rights through organized, nonviolent action.
King helped lead the Montgomery bus boycott after Rosa Parks was arrested in 1955. He later supported marches, voter registration efforts, and campaigns against segregation. His speech at the 1963 March on Washington became one of the movement’s most remembered moments.
In 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize. He continued speaking against poverty and injustice until he was assassinated in Memphis in 1968. Martin Luther King Jr. Day now encourages people to remember his work through learning and service.
